Harry Matthews

Harry Matthews is a Postgraduate research student for Composition at Bath Spa University & the University of Southampton.


He is a composer, pianist and musical co-director of OUT-TAKE Ensemble based in Bristol, UK.


His work focuses on composing for instruments and field recordings, exploring various methods of listening to human activity.

Works have been composed for Juliet Fraser, James Saunders, Barton/Rhys Duo, Ben Jameson, Nebula Percussion, OUT-TAKE Ensemble, and Ensemble Paramirabo. Harry’s current projects and workshops include works for Leith Hill National Trust, Jane Chapman, Bozzini Quartet, Riot Ensemble, Caitlin Rowley, Ensemble Material, and OUT-TAKE Ensemble.

Harry is currently studying for a PhD in Composition with James Saunders at Bath Spa University and with Matthew Shlomowitz at University of Southampton (AHRC Funded by SWW DTP). He completed his BA in Music (1st) and MMus in Composition (Distinction), supervised by Benjamin Oliver and Matthew Shlomowitz at the University of Southampton in 2016/17.

His works have been performed across the UK, and he has been featured as an emerging UK composer in Montreal, Canada by Ensemble Paramirabo.
